NASC Gold COUNCIL OF EXCELLENCE!

2006
2007
2008

For the THIRD consecutive year, the National Association of Student Councils (NASC) has recognized the Brooklawn Middle School Student Council of Parsippany, New Jersey as a "National Gold Council of Excellence". This award recognizes outstanding Student Council programs for their exemplary efforts at the local, state, and national levels to build student leaders while improving their schools and communities through leadership, service, and activities.  The purpose of this award is to provide national recognition for middle and high school Student Councils that maintain strong year-round programs, and provide broader recognition for their most worthy efforts. We are excited about receiving this honor for the second time from our national student council association, and recognize all the benefits that active participation in state and national activities has given to our student leaders.

The Brooklawn Student Council has also been active and recognized for excellence at the state level by the New Jersey Association of Student Councils (NJASC). A two-time winner of the NJASC Standards of Excellence award (1999, 2004), Brooklawn students and alumni have participated and taken leadership roles in the activities of their state association. Several Brooklawn Executive Board members have served on the NJASC Executive Board and continue to serve as Junior Counselors at the NJASC Leadership Training Conference. Brooklawn Student Council Advisor Lou Miller currently serves as an Executive Director of the NJASC, and has been a contributing author for Leadership Magazine. Throughout the school year, Brooklawn students join those from many other New Jersey schools in supporting the NJASC State Charity while participating in such programs as Honor School Student Council, Community Smile, and Top Ten Projects.

The Brooklawn Student Activities program includes events and opportunities to develop leadership in all students. Each November, over four hundred students, teachers, parents, and alumni take part in Brooklawn's Intense Games, a week-long event where they participate in various team-building activities in a fun and competitive environment. This past March, Brooklawn's B.L.T. Saturday Leadership Training Conference included over 150 participants from 15 area schools. Students from Brooklawn also attend the NJASC Leadership Training Conference each year, bringing back the energy and valuable leadership lessons learned there to further strengthen the Brooklawn Student Activities program.

Only EIGHT middle schools nationwide were named Gold Councils of Excellence by the NASC in 2007. Only one other school in New Jersey achieved this honor, and we congratulate our friends at Bordentown Regional High School on attaining it. The NASC applauds the work of all award winning schools and challenges them to continue their exemplary efforts to build student leaders and work to improve their schools and communities through service and activities. We look forward to doing just that at Brooklawn, as we continue active participation in our state (NJASC) and national (NASC) student council associations.

All Councils of Excellence and Gold Councils of Excellence will be recognized by the NASC at their 2008 National Conference. The 72nd NASC National Conference will be held June 25-28, 2008 at Northwest High School in Fort Worth, TX. Along with fellow NJASC Executive Director Wendy Booth Sitzler, Mr. Miller will lead the New Jersey delegation of forty students and advisors from throughout over our state.
