STUdent council - the general assembly

The General
Assembly of the Brooklawn Student Council is required by our Constitution to meet twice each month. Its
meetings are held during Periods 5, 6, or 7 in Room B-16. This
assures maximum attendance and participation of all members,
while limiting class pullouts and avoiding conflicts with other
after school programs and activities. The Third
Article of our Constitution specifies that the General Assembly will consist of the
following:
-
All members of the Student Council
Executive Board. There is a general election
conducted each April, in which the 6th and 7th grades
choose eight members of the Executive Board. They
are the four winners of the election for each office
(President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary) and the
four second place finishers, who become the Board of
Directors. In the days that follow, the President decides on two
additional Committee chair appointments, which must be approved by the
Advisor. The Executive Board expands from April to
June, to include all newly elected associate members as they
prepare to take over when the gavel is passed at our
Graduation Ceremony in June. Click here to learn more about
our Executive Board.
-
One elected representative from each
homeroom. There is
an election each September, which must be held before the
tenth day of school, to choose representatives. A procedure has
been put in place for those representatives whose homeroom changes each
quarter or semester, which is outlined in the Third Article of our Constitution to elect two representatives.
If a Homeroom Representative is absent for four meetings
of the General Assembly, the Ninth
Section of the Third Article provides for their automatic removal from
Student Council.
-
"Members-At-Large". Any student who fails to win a
representative election, but still wishes to actively
participate in the Brooklawn Student Council may try to
become a "Member-at-Large". To apply for
a Member-at-Large position, you must first register with
the Advisor, agree to attend all meetings of the General
Assembly, and agree to serve on one Committee of the
President's choice. All applicants must also type a
one-page essay that explains why they want to become
involved in the Student Council, and what they have to
offer it. If more students apply than there are
available positions, the Executive Board will anonymously
judge these essays to make selection decisions. The Third Article of our Constitution clearly explains the limitations
and responsibilities of members-at-large in our Student
Council.
